What you need to know about blood tests
A blood test is one of the medical tests most often requested by doctors. It may be required routinely as a health check, as part of a medical examination before taking up a physical or work activity, to help monitor patients suffering from a condition such as diabetes, or to help diagnose an illness. In any case, it is used to determine the patient’s general state of health and involves drawing a small amount of venous blood so that its composition can be determined through laboratory analysis.

At Grup Creu Blava we carry out complete and specialist blood tests for the early diagnosis, monitoring and follow-up of our patients’ health. Through haematological and biochemical studies, our specialists can detect abnormalities in red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, measure levels of cholesterol, glucose, hormones and liver, kidney and metabolic markers, and identify infections, nutritional deficiencies or chronic diseases.
We work with modern laboratories and highly qualified staff who guarantee fast, accurate and reliable results. Blood tests are an essential tool for disease prevention, monitoring treatments and the general assessment of health, making it possible to design personalised medical plans for each patient.

Types of test
The most commonly requested results are the full blood count and blood biochemistry:
- Full blood count: The full blood count measures the concentration of each of the cellular components of the blood (red blood cells, white blood cells, etc.). It also checks whether the cells have a normal shape and structure or whether they are altered
- Biochemistry: Biochemistry is the study of the chemical substances present in the blood, such as potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium, vitamins, hormones, etc

Does it require any special preparation?
Blood samples are taken with a syringe or similar device, usually from a vein. If only a few drops are needed, a small prick is made in the fingertip and gentle, light pressure is applied to draw the blood required.
Generally, you will need:
- To fast for at least six/eight hours, as eating food alters many of the parameters
- Apart from this requirement, no special preparation is needed
