Treatments we offer
Cryotherapy: what does this treatment involve? Cryotherapy or cryosurgery is a treatment that removes lesions by burning and freezing them, applying a very cold substance, liquid nitrogen.
The Grup Creu Blava Dermatology team will spray the area to be treated with liquid nitrogen to freeze it. Immediately after the procedure, the treated area will turn red. It may also blister and swell. If this happens, do not burst the blisters. You may also see clear discharge from the treated area. This is normal.
The treated area will heal in around 7 to 10 days. It will probably not leave scars.
04
What is Cryotherapy used for?
It is used to treat skin lesions, which are growths of tissue or patches that do not look like the surrounding skin. It is used to:
On rare occasions, cryotherapy is used to treat some skin cancers. However, the skin destroyed during cryotherapy cannot be examined under a microscope. A skin biopsy is needed if your healthcare provider wants to examine the lesion for signs of cancer.
Cryotherapy works well for many people. Some skin lesions, especially warts, may need to be treated more than once.
Electrocoagulation: what does this treatment involve? A technique that applies a concentrated electric current to coagulate the tissue that needs to be removed (seborrhoeic keratoses, warts, cherry angiomas, etc.). Unlike cryotherapy, the key here is heat rather than cold.
It is performed under local anaesthetic and can be carried out at Grup Creu Blava medical centres, as it does not require hospitalisation.
- Remove warts
- Benign (non-cancerous) lesions
- Actinic keratosis: to destroy precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratoses or solar keratoses)
05
Benefits of electrocoagulation
- A simple procedure carried out in the consulting room. No special preparation is required
- Multiple lesions can be treated in a single session
- It vaporises warts and coagulates them at the same time, preventing bleeding
- As it has very few contraindications, it can be performed on all types of patients: children and older people alike
06
Aftercare advice following electrocoagulation
Although infections are very rare, you will be given a series of instructions for caring for the treated area, such as:
Do not hesitate to book an appointment with the Grup Creu Blava Dermatology Unit: we are at your disposal to answer all your questions with no obligation.
- Washing the area with soap and water and/or an antiseptic if the professional considers it necessary
- If the treated area is exposed, using sun protection
- Using healing ointments, where appropriate, on the resulting scabs to speed up healing
